Fri 25.10.2024 at 1900 Bodø Big Band plays instrumental Estonian big band jazz under the direction of Toomas Peterson in Bodø 2024 Sacandic Havet Bodø Big Band was founded in February 1977, and is a big band consisting of musicians based in Bodø. The big band is associated with Norsk Jazzforum and Nordnorsk Jazzsenter, and has a close collaboration with Bodø's main rhythm scene Sinus. The band has a standard big band line-up with 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones and comp. In addition, they often perform concerts with soloists from both the local and international scene and are a band that likes to explore and challenge both themselves and the audience. Bodø Big Band brought Knut Anders Sørum to last year's big band festival in Tromsø. It was to show that Norwegian-language music works like a charm in the big band format. Bodø Big Band has been doing this for 40 years, in collaboration with songwriters such as Terje Nilsen, Lars Bremnes, Unni Wilhelmsen and Halvdan Sivertsen to name a few. For this year's big band festival, Bodø Big Band wanted to challenge themselves and their audience, by doing something completely new that the band has never done before: Playing instrumental big band music from Estonia and a bit from Austria. Why? Yes, both have cities that are European capitals of culture together with Bodø this year. Tartu in Estonia and Bad Ischl in Austria. Bodø Big Band has invited the leader of Tartu Big Band, Toomas Peterson to Bodø to conduct this concert at the big band festival. Bodø Big Band is very much looking forward to presenting music that no other big band friends in Northern Norway have ever heard before. We promise outgoing, demanding and melodic music, with one foot in folk music and one foot in funk! This is going to be exciting! Welcome! About NNSF - North Norwegian Big Band Festival On 25-26 October 2024, the North Norwegian Big Band Festival will be held in Bodø! A total of 11 big bands from all over Northern Norway, in addition to the legendary Swedish big band Norrbotten Big Band, gather for a grand concert weekend at Scandic Havet. We get to experience some of the leading jazz musicians from the northern hemisphere, in close and driving interaction. The festival is organized by Nordnorsk Jazzforum and Bodø Big Band, in collaboration with Ad Lib Jazzklubb, and is supported by Samfunnsløftet, Nordnorsk Jazzsenter and Bodø municipality. Nordnorsk Big Band Festival saw the light of day in 2023, following the initiative of Nordnorsk Jazzforum. The idea was to gather as many as possible of the North Norwegian big bands for a weekend of concerts and inspiration. A similar large-band gathering had not been arranged in northern Norway for several decades. With support from Samfunnsløftet, Nordnorsk Jazzsenter and Tromsø municipality, we gathered 11 big bands at Storgata Camping in Tromsø, on the weekend of 28-30 April 2023. Over 700 audience members got to experience big bands in top form - from Sandnessjøen in the south to Vadsø in the north, and with a varied and exciting programme. Big bands are unique in that they bring together both amateurs and professionals, across generations and genders, and are important pillars of the local jazz communities in our part of the country. The big band festival therefore creates a long-awaited meeting place for both the public and musicians. What characterizes northern Norwegian big bands is that they are spread over an enormous geographical area, and that they are of great importance in their local environment - as important music arenas for amateurs and professionals of all ages. The geographical distances make it challenging to interact across the environments. The Nordnorsk Big Band Festival will do something about this, so that the big band communities can meet, develop and strengthen. The Northern Norwegian Big Band Festival will bring together the Northern Norwegian big band community across the country, and through the festival facilitate concerts, inspiration, exchange of repertoire and concert concepts, experience sharing, recruitment and audience development, as well as generally increased visibility of big bands Welcome to the concert!
